Fifth Grade - Fishished Emojis!

Fifth grade students looked at pop art to influence this Emoji project. After discussing
subject matter and pop artists, students learned about color and how it affects mood and feeling. They discussed how this is seen not only in art, but in every area of our lives like logos, restaurants, schools and really everywhere!. Students used this information to create Emoji redesigns. They chose an emotion or feeling that they wanted to represent and used color, shapes and facial expression to portray the feeling. They completed the project using felt and yarn.

Third Grade - Klimt Trees

Third grade students began this project by looking at the work of Gustav Klimt. Classes discussed how he was considered to be a symbolic painter and looked at the way Klimt used symbols throughout his work.

Using “The Tree of Life” by Klimt as inspiration, students created a whimsical tree on a warm color painted background. Students then developed 4 symbols to represent their favorite season, food, hobby and holiday. The sketches were transferred to metal foil where students embossed and de-bossed details using tooling techniques. The symbols were antiqued using black paint and finally attached to their trees to complete a tree self-portrait.

First Grade - Perspective and Pattern

After finishing their textured backgrounds, first grade looked the way trees appear when looked at in a forest. Students noticed that the further back a tree was, the smaller and higher up on the ground it appeared. Students created trees by cutting simple shapes and applying patterns. They placed the trees on their backgrounds to achieve perspective by placing a row higher on the page and the trees in the front lower on the page.

Fourth Grade - O'Keefe Flowers

Fourth grade students are looking at the work of Georgia O'Keefe. Classes discussed her work as it relates to layout and color. Students used the close up and cropped layout ideas from O'Keefe's work to guide them as they created a design of a flower on their artworks. They traced their pencils lines with black glue, which gives a raised border to their shapes.

First Grade - Visual Texture Perspective

First grade students are beginning a project by exploring texture. Classes discussed the difference between texture that you can feel and texture that looks like it feels a certain way. Students created this "visual texture" int he background of their projects by painting with a variety of tools including sponges, toilet paper rolls, hair combs and pattern rollers.

Kindergarten - Clay Mittens

Kindergarten classes are experimenting with clay. After reading "The Missing Mitten Mystery" classes created their own mittens out of clay. After using a tracer to create a mitten shape out of a slab of clay, students created patterned textures. They finished the mitten with a cuff made from ball of clay which are attached using a scor, slip and pinching method.

Fifth Grade - Soft Sculpture Emojis

Fifth grade students are learning about color and how it affects mood and feeling. Classes discussed colors and how they are used in logos, restaurants and other areas in order to influence viewers. Students used this information to create emoji redesigns. They chose an emotion or feeling that they wanted to represent and used color, shapes and facial expression to portray the feeling. Students are using felt and yarn to create their designs.

Sixth Grade - Masks

6th grade students are looking at mask designs from around the world as inspiration for their next project. Classes are discussing uses for masks and ways that masks are important to different cultures. Students began by designing their own masks. They thought about a particular ceremony or event that the mask would be used for and created symbols and patterns that represented this event.

Second Grade Trees

Second grade is doing a small project to build on what they have learned about perspective. This time, students are using various brushes and sponges to create a warm color painting. They use brown paint to add trunks, showing that longer and wider trunks appear close to the viewer, while shorter and thinner trunks which are centered on the paper appear to be further away.

Sixth Grade - Finished Portraits

Sixth Grade students are finishing up their self-portraits. After laying out their features and shading with pencil, students filled in the background. They chose symbols that represented themselves and, using analogous colors, filled in their backgrounds to add to the artwork about themselves.

Fifth Grade - Finished Still Life Compositions!

Fifth grade finished their contour line drawings by tracing their lines in ink and painting them with watercolor. They used analogous color washes to make sure that the paint did not detract from their lines.

Kindergarten - Finished Pumpkins!

The Kindergarten classes are finishing up their pumpkins and pumpkin patches. They have been working hard on learning how to trace a tracer and cut out shapes. They worked on circles, ovals, semi-circles and squares in this project.

First Grade - Tints and Shades

First grade students are learning how to create shadows and highlights on an object by mixing paint. They began by drawing a pumpkin. Next, they slowly added white paint to get different tints - each getting lighter as they went toward the outside of the pumpkin. Next, they will be mixing shadows.

Second Grade - Perspective

Second grade is learning about perspective and how to make artwork appear to be 3-dimensional on a 2-dimensional surface. Classes discussed how to use size and placement in order to achieve this look.

To begin, students created a pumpkin field by making the lines further apart as they came toward them on the page. Next, students added pumpkins. Large forms in front, medium in the middle and tiny shapes in back.

Students began to add chalk pastels and created a "spooky" moon with coffee filters, markers and water which will be added next week.

Fifth Grade - Contour Line Drawings

After practicing an upside down contour line drawing, 5th grade students began their own layouts. Students focused on line and detail of the objects. They also incorporated overlap, size, cropping and position into their layouts in order to create visual interest. Next week they will use watercolor and ink to finish the project.

Third Grade - Colors Complete!

Third grade took their paintings and created dandelion color wheels. Students created and organized primary, secondary and tertiary colors.
